Moving 1000 Miles with Chronic Pain: Exhausting

Moving has always been a daunting task, but when you’re in your 60s and dealing with chronic pain, it takes on a whole new level of complexity. I’d like to share my personal experience of relocating over 1000 miles while grappling with arthritis and chronic pain. It’s a journey filled with challenges, frustrations, and moments of reflection that I hope will resonate with others who face similar circumstances. Now I’m not trying to be negative because I’m thrilled to be out of Ohio. But I will be feeling this move for months.

  1. The Reality of Aging and Chronic Pain:
Let’s face it; moving is a challenge for anyone, especially when you hit your 40s. However, when you’re in your 60s and living with arthritis and chronic pain, it becomes a monumental task. The physical demands of packing, lifting, and hauling are no longer as easily manageable as they once were. Every step feels like a mountain to climb.
  2. The Temptation to Simplify:
At times, the thought of giving away all your possessions and starting anew can be tempting. The weight of your belongings, both physical and emotional, can become overwhelming. You find yourself considering minimalism as a solution, just to alleviate the stress of moving with chronic pain.
  3. The Lack of Understanding:
One of the most challenging aspects of moving with chronic pain is the lack of understanding from those who are not in your shoes. Most healthy individuals simply can’t grasp the constant pain, fatigue, and limitations that come with conditions like arthritis. They might offer well-intentioned advice, but it often falls short of acknowledging the daily battles you face.
  4. The Importance of Self-Care:
Throughout this journey, I’ve come to realize the critical importance of self-care. Moving is physically and emotionally taxing, and it’s essential to prioritize your well-being. Taking breaks, asking for help, and seeking support from healthcare professionals are all vital steps to ensure you don’t exacerbate your chronic pain during the move.
  5. The Power of Resilience:
Moving with chronic pain may feel like an insurmountable challenge, but it’s also an opportunity to tap into your resilience. It’s a chance to prove to yourself that you can overcome obstacles, adapt to new environments, and find strength in vulnerability.

So moving 1000 miles when you have chronic pain is undeniably tough. It’s a journey filled with physical and emotional hurdles, but it’s also an opportunity for personal growth and resilience. To those who have faced similar challenges, know that you’re not alone, and your determination to keep moving forward, even when it hurts, is a testament to your strength.
