Beating the Heat with Arthritis (Because Who Needs More?!)

Are you living with osteoarthritis like me or other types of arthritis in the Florida heat? Let’s just say, it’s an adventure—and not always the cool kind. High humidity and blazing sun often leave our joints feeling stiffer than a 2×4 and pain levels might spike like a fireworks display. If you’re autoimmune like RA, JIA, or Lupus, add medication side effects hello, photosensitivity—to the mix.

But fear not; even in the blazing, humid chaos, there are ways to stay cool and keep smiling!

My favorite tips for beating the heat:

  • Stay in the shade. The sun can be your friend, but only if you’re not stuck in the middle of it.
  • Seek cover during peak hours. From 10 am to 4 pm, the sun’s at its fiery best—or worst, depending on your perspective.
  • Layer up with protective clothing. Think wide-brim hats, long sleeves, and lightweight fabrics that shield your skin without making you sweat like a water balloon.
  • Find indoor activities like going to the aquarium/ planetarium or game room

Fun fact: Sunshine is a double-edged sword. It helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which may help preserve joint cartilage, but too much sun exposure can lead to sunburn, especially if your meds are photo-sensitive. So, sunscreen isn’t just for beach days—it’s for every sunny adventure!

Additional tips: Links below

  • Hydrate often—your joints and skin will thank you.
  • Use cold packs or cooling tubes on those sore spots.
  • Consider beach cabanas or portable umbrellas for quick escapes.

Remember, each person’s reaction to heat and humidity varies. Some find relief in warm climates, while others prefer cooler spots. And if Lupus or another autoimmune condition is part of your story, talk to your doctor about managing sun exposure.

Stay cool, hydrate, and keep a sense of humor—it’s the best remedy in any weather!
