The Kids Are Learning… and the Parents Can Finally Hear Themselves Think Again!
Can you believe it? It’s back-to-school time already!
The backpacks are packed, the pencils are sharpened, the new shoes are ready to be scuffed up by approximately 10:15 a.m. on the first day…and parents everywhere are waving goodbye with a tear in one eye and a tiny celebration happening in the other. 😂
We love our kids and grandkids more than anything in the world, but after a long summer of hearing “I’m hungry!”, “I’m bored!”, and “What are we doing today?” approximately 847 times…
A few quiet hours might not be such a terrible thing! ☕😂
But back to school also means getting back into the routine of packing lunches, and that can become a challenge pretty quickly.
The good news? A healthy school lunch doesn’t have to be fancy, expensive, or Pinterest-perfect. Kids just need a good variety of foods they’ll actually eat.
🍎 Easy & Healthy Lunchbox Ideas
Try mixing and matching a few of these throughout the week:
PB & Jelly
An old-fashioned favorite! Use whole-grain bread when possible and pair it with fruit. Just remember to check your school’s rules regarding peanuts and other nuts.
Cheese & Turkey Pepperoni
Make your own little lunchable! Add whole-grain crackers and sliced fruit for an easy finger-food lunch.
Mini Salad
A small container of lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, cheese, tomatoes, or whatever veggies your child enjoys. Put the dressing in a separate little container.
Mozzarella Balls & Tomatoes
Mini mozzarella balls with cherry or grape tomatoes make an easy, colorful lunchbox addition. For younger children, cut tomatoes appropriately to reduce choking risk.
Bananas 🍌
Easy, inexpensive, naturally packaged, and no container required!
Apples 🍎
Whole, sliced, or paired with a little sunflower-seed butter if your school allows it.
Grapes 🍇
Sweet, refreshing, and easy to pack. For younger children, cut grapes lengthwise rather than serving them whole.
Yogurt
Choose one with less added sugar when possible and keep it cold with an ice pack.
Pudding
Yes, there can be something fun in the lunchbox too! Healthy eating doesn’t mean every single thing has to be broccoli. A small pudding cup can make lunch feel like a treat.
🧃 3 Good Drinks to Pack
Water — Simple, inexpensive, and the best everyday choice for staying hydrated.
Milk — A good option that provides calcium, protein, and other important nutrients. Keep it properly chilled.
100% Fruit Juice — An occasional small serving can be an easy lunchbox option. Look for 100% juice rather than fruit drinks with lots of added sugar.
And don’t forget the reusable water bottle!
Make Lunch Fun!
You don’t have to create sandwiches shaped like Disney characters at 6:30 in the morning. Nobody has time for that every day. 😂 but sometimes it’s fun!
Simply give kids a little variety. Let them help choose their fruit, pick between two healthy snacks, or choose what goes into their sandwich.
And every once in a while, slip a little note into their lunchbox:
“I love you!”
“Have a great day!”
“You’ve got this!”
Or my personal favorite:
“Please eat the apple. I know you’re going to try to trade it.” 😂🍎
Back-to-school season can be hectic, but it can also be exciting. New teachers, new friends, new experiences, and another year of watching our children and grandchildren learn and grow.
So here’s to a wonderful, healthy, safe school year for all our kids!
And to all the parents who finally have a few quiet hours again…
Enjoy that cup of coffee while it’s actually HOT! ☕😂
Happy Back-to-School Season! 🎒📚🍎
